Sixteen lines of verse follow, printed in two parallel columns. Between the columns is an illustration of Southey's monument in Crosthwaite Church on a background view of Southey's residence, Greta Hall. Illustration has caption: "This monument was erected by friends of Robert Southey. Southey's monument, Crosthwaite Church, Keswick." Publication and printing information flanks the illustrations.
Second edition. Contains two substantive differences from all others known: line 15 concludes "vanished, as a cloud" rather than "vanished like a cloud," and the last two lines of text are wanting. In late January 1844, the sculptor erased from the monument the last two lines of the already-engraved inscription to enter a revision. The artist likely made his transcription during the interval when the lines were absent. Cf. Reed.
Trimmed vertically; original height unknown.
- Local Notes:
RBC copy: Final two lines of poem have been added in manuscript. According to Reed, the poems are in the hand of Mary Wordsworth. Sheet bears evidence that it used to have a longer vertical dimension. The bottom of the sheet contains line endings in manuscript in the hand of Mary Wordsworth, suggesting that a letter had been written on the other portion of the sheet, which was subsequently torn off. Also laid in is a photocopy of another copy, with manuscript note: "The copy pasted in the Bertha Southey/Herbert Hill album. Envelope with possible accession information laid in. Gift of Mark L. Reed.
