A young kamuro (brothel maid) is sold into the red-light district Yoshiwara and is put under the care of the oiran (courtesan) of the Tamakiku house, Shouhi, who names her Tomeki. However, the young girl is not weak willed and does not hesitate to rebel against her superiors and her fellow maids. She soon rises up the ranks and becomes known as Kiyoha, the most beautiful girl in the Tamakiku household. But with this new stature comes jealous rivals and the impossibility of true love.
