Summary

When Patricia Randall returns to her roots on historically-rich Roanoke Island, North Carolina, during the summer of 1966, she is hoping for a new start. Still struggling with a harrowing separation from her husband, she sees the Outer Banks as the perfect place to find peace. But as a new reporter for the Dare County News, she soon finds herself thrust into the tumult of the Vietnam era. It is the time of the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, the civil rights movement, and the women's liberation movement, and Patricia enters fully into the passionate conflicts that divide the nation. When she discovers that she has become a target of vengeance by her estranged husband and a currupt local policeman, however, Patricia is then forced to face the irony that by living fully according to her own rules for the first time in her life, she has inadvertently set in motion events that endanger everything she loves. How Patricia finds strength and spirit to survive these events is the heart and soul of Drinkwater's Folly.
