"The book contains a cycle of 27 poems by myself, Simic and Ristovic, all of them concerning the Devil or humans behaving in devilish ways.... The structure is a variation on an ordinary casebound book.... The variation is that half of the signatures are sewn together on the right-hand side, and half on the left, alternating through the text block (it is really like two separately sewn text blocks slid together). "--Author's statement.
Largely inspired by an untitled poem by Aleksandar Ristovic as translated by Charles Simic, which contains the line: "Time of fools is coming, time of the know-nothing professor and the book that cannot be cracked open at either edge."--Cf. author's statement.
