Summary

In the middle of World War II, polio struck western N.C. There was no cure in sight. With help from surrounding towns, the citizens of Hickory built and staffed a hospital complex to meet the challenge and became the subject of national attention. Former patients comment on the urgency for treatment in the days before the Salk vaccine.
