It's the early 1920s and women have just gotten the right to vote and Stokes Jackson has come down to Asheville from New York to run Wayne Gilmore's state senate campaign. Gilmore's opponent is a woman, Joan Bellamy, so a key part of Jackson's strategy will be to persuade women to vote for his candidate and at first he thinks throwing mud on Bellamy's reputation will help. Then he's murdered. The whole Bellamy family comes under suspicion. And only with the help of a detective will Joan able to prove her innocence.
